“GURU NANAK NIWAS INDEPENDENT LIVING AND ASSISTED LIVING FACILITY” PROGRAM
The Fraser Health Authority. Progressive Intercultural Community Services Surrey, Delta, BC, Canada.
Program Description
"Stigma is there, the cultural values are breaking down very quickly. The reason is inability to look after their parents, husband and wife both are working to pay the mortgage, its not a matter of choice anymore."
- Charan Gill
– Senior Resident, Saroj Sood
The South Asian Assisted Living Facility provides 24 hour care with registered Care Aides, licensed Practical Nurses and on-call Physicians, who are able to communicate in English, Punjabi, Hindi, Bengali, Urdu and Fijian Hindi.
Meals services include South Asian cuisine, and can be catered to specific dietary restrictions and preferences. The facility is also located nearby local temples and other services.
The organization also runs two other programs:
-An independent housing facility is available with one or two bedrooms.
-A Seniors Day Program: The family of a South Asian elder may benefit by receiving respite and help with the care of a loved one. They may also be better able to deal with feelings of guilt they may have from otherwise leaving an elder who perhaps does not speak English home alone.
The benefit to Senior citizens from the social interaction they receive from other seniors who speak there language and understand their culture and from participating in stimulating activities is immeasurable.
Some of the services offered include:
-physical and speech therapy
-exercise facilities
-spa amenities
-clubhouse/lounge
-library/reading lounge
-planned social activities
The organizations facilities do not discriminate based on cultural or religion and welcomes seniors from Sikh, Hindu, Muslim, Christian faiths and all others.
Charan Gill campaigned and arranged for funding and construction of the "Guru Nanak Niwas Assisted Living and Independent Living Facility" Program. He is the CEO of the Progressive Intercultural Community Services Society. Mr. Gill founded the Canadian Farm Worker's' Union and has been a long time South Asian community advocate.
