Program Description
Visually impaired or blind seniors meet twice weekly at the Blind Industries and Services of Maryland center for a full day of education and instruction including:
-Cane travel and learning to utilize public transportation systems if applicable
-Braille
-Adjustment to blindness seminars
-Computer technology
-Independent living
-Cooking
-Social activities and crafts, gardening
Visually impaired or blind seniors participate in peer interaction, off-site training excursions, community activities.
If visually impaired or blind seniors are unable to attend training at the Blind Industries and Services of Maryland center then Senior in-home assistance and teaching is available in the convenience of their own home. Seniors are taught Braille, cane travel, and daily living skills, non-visual methods for cooking, cleaning, laundry, money identification, medication labeling, neighborhood travel, appointment management, as well as the use of aids and appliances, and specialized services for the blind.
Residential Senior Retreats are available which are our-day residential retreat for blind seniors or seniors with vision loss where seniors learn new skills, build self-confidence, and develop strategies for living independently with vision loss. Overnight accommodations are provided and seniors are ablet ot form friendships among peers and establish a strong support network.
