FRIENDS OF THE ELDERLY TRANSITION YEAR AND CSPE PROGRAM

Program Description
"The central aim of the Friends of the Elderly Transition Year and CSPE Programmes is to give time for the young and old to enjoy each other’s company. The planned activities will give the students a greater appreciation of the values of the elderly, of how life was lived in Ireland during the 30’s, 40’s and 50’s, of what the elderly have achieved and what they are passing on to us. We hope that students will take with them the knowledge that the elderly are good company, that ageing is an integral part of life, and that a life well led should be celebrated. "

Intergenerational activities give students appreciation of the values of the elderly, their achievements and the history of Ireland.
Students participate by engaging with the elderly in several ways some of which include:
-Writing a biography or essay about their elder.
-Asking their elder to come to their school for a public speaking event recalling their life. -Experiences in “Life In My Day.”
-Entertaining the elderly with an activity at a nursing facility.
Students may participate in the program either individually or as a whole class.
Those who complete the program will receive certification from the Irish Minister for Older People and Health Promotion.
The organization also heads other programs such as the “Campaigning for the Elderly Program,” which advocates for the rights of elderly, visitation programs and more.
The Friends of the Elderly organization also relies on older intern students to stay at the facility and help run the volunteer base.
