VILLAGE CONCEPTS SENIOR PEN PAL PROGRAM
Washington State, USA.
Program Description
“ ‘We decided to create our Village Concepts Pen Pal Program as soon as we knew we needed to social distance and the schools were out,’ says Danie Monaghan, director of operations at Village Concepts senior community in Auburn, Washington. ‘I saw the immediate impact on both my small children and the residents that we serve. From there it was easy to find both children and seniors who wanted to participate.’ ”

During the COVID-19 pandemic many older adults living in assisted living and senior care homes are isolated due to restricted visitations to their facility. Some seniors are unable to leave their rooms and are in great need of communication, connection and socialization.
The Village Concepts Pen Pal Program gives seniors the opportunity to receive letters and cards from kids who are at home and have an opportunity to discuss topics of joint interest such as hobbies, cooking, pets, jokes etc.
The program matches older adults with kids and safely handles mail before distribution to seniors.
Seniors feel that there is an additional person who is looking out for them. They are given something to look forward to in anticipating their next letter and crafting a response. Children are given an opportunity to help the elderly and make a meaningful contribution to the lives of older adults.
Village Concepts manages Independent Living, Assisted Living, Memory Care and Senior Apartment facilities in Washington State.
