Program Description
“The Girl Scouts Adopt a Grandparent Patch Program is designed to pair a Girl Scout with a senior friend for sharing talents, knowledge, explore the differences in generational attitudes and increase knowledge of the aging process.”

Adopted Grandparents and Girl Scouts are encouraged to better understand and appreciate differences in generational attitudes and to address challenging issues dealing with the aging population.
Girl Scouts are to meet with seniors over several months or more.
Ideas for connecting with and better understanding older adults may include:
-Walking in a seniors shoes by understanding what it is like to physically age by modifying senses such as placing cotton in ears, blurring vision through blurred lenses, etc.
-Discussing backgrounds, heritage, accomplishments, careers, learning about technology, music and more.
Girl Scouts encourages girls to help seniors through various service projects such as:
- Teaching a younger Girl Scout troop about challenges the elderly face and ways to be considerate and helpful towards older adults in the community.
- Help serve food at a program that feeds the elderly at a senior center, nursing home, assisted living facility or retirement home.
- Adopt an assisted living facility, nursing home or senior citizen center.
- Helping elderly with yard work or trash.
