ONLINE PHARMACY FRAUD CAMPAIGN

WHATAn alliance of organizations dedicated to keeping older adults safe when purchasing prescriptions online.
WHYThe alliance aims to provide checks and balances and to act as a watch dog with respect to the various online businesses selling prescription drugs.
WHERENational Consumers League (NCL)
The Alliance for Safe Online Pharmacies (ASOP Global)
The Center for Safe Internet Pharmacies (CSIP)

Program Description

“What looks like a discount online pharmacy from Canada or the U.S. could be a rogue website from anywhere in the world. We at CSIP have partnered with a growing number of state governments and health service organizations to provide a website dedicated to helping you determine if your online pharmacy is certified and from a safe source.”

“Up to 96% of the 35,000+ pharmacies operating online are illegal and unsafe. Drugs sold by illegal online sellers are often counterfeit, containing too much, too little, or no active ingredients. Even worse, these fakes may be made using toxic substances, like fentanyl, floor wax, mercury, concrete, road tar, paint thinner, anti-freeze and other poisons – contributing to up to one million deaths worldwide each year. Buying from illegal online pharmacies also increases the risk of credit card and identity theft.”

“The National Consumers League is pleased to be collaborating with the Alliance for Safe Online Pharmacies and the Center for Safe Internet Pharmacies to not only educate seniors and their caregivers about online pharmacies, but also empower them to make safe and informed decisions when shopping for prescription drugs online. Counterfeit drugs have long been an area of great concern for NCL, and we are enthusiastic about contributing to this joint effort to keep older Americans safe online.”

The Alliance for Safe Online Pharmacies aims to expose the risk of illegal online pharmacies and also conducts research and educates consumers and policymakers.

The Alliance for Safe Online Pharmacies helps older adults verify legitimate online pharmacies.

The alliance suggests that older adults can learn how to keep safe online when buying prescription drugs for home delivery by taking the following steps:

  • Using websites ending in .pharmacy which have been verified by the National Association of Boards of Pharmacy.
  • Using the website Buysaferx.pharmacy which can help find safe online pharmacies in the USA, Canada, EU, India, China and Latin America.
  • Entering the name of the online pharmacy on legitscript.com to find out who runs a website, product, or service.

The Center for Safe Internet Pharmacies is a group of the world’s leading Internet and e-commerce companies such as google, Microsoft, PayPal, Amex, Facebook, Mastercard, and Discover to fight fake online pharmacies. The website acts a clearinghouse for certified safe online resources for medicines. The organization collaborates with global law enforcement to ensure that those involved in manufacturing or selling counterfeit medicines, and illegal online pharmacies are caught.

The Center for Safe Internet Pharmacies also provides safe online pharmacy resources such as Save On My Meds and Verify Before You Buy for older adults and others so that they can learn not only how to save money on prescription drugs but how to make sure an online pharmacy is safe.

Fight the Fakes shares the stories of those who have been negativity affected by fake medicines and online pharmacies and hopes to spread the word about the dangers of buying prescription drugs online.
