"ART WITH ELDERS AT LAGUNA HONDA HOSPITAL AND NURSING HOME" PROGRAM
San Francisco Department of Public Health City and County of San Francisco
Elder Givers, Mark Campbell - Program Director
San Francisco, CA, USA.
Program Description
Offers senior residents of Laguna Honda hospital (a 62-acre skilled nursing facility, one of the largest in the United States) art and painting classes four days a week and includes special sessions for monolingual Chinese-speakers and residents in the Alzheimer’s program.
Laguna Honda is unique in promoting senior arts by offering seniors artistic nursing home activities. Seniors take art classes in watercolors, acrylics, oil pastels, crayon, pen and ink and pencil drawings and collages which are used to create beautiful art pieces.
Senior art classes are taught by an artistic director who heads up the nursing home activities program.
Senior art work from Laguna Honda’s senior residents is featured at an annual “Art With Elders” exhibit and is exhibited in the Laguna Honda Hospital and nursing home.
Laguna Honda Hospital and nursing home houses an art studio space for seniors to work on artistic activites.
Art therapy in nursing homes, and long-term care facilities focuses on person-centered care and promotes culture change in nursing homes from the old model of "one size fits all."
