The mobile “Dementia Brain Bus” can be booked by organizations such as nursing homes, care homes, dementia daycare center and others. Dementia activities are person-centered and tailored to meet the needs of individuals and also can be tailored to the organization.
Physical Activities for people living with Dementia is just as important as mental well-being.The “Dementia Brain Bus” Program offers:
A virtual exercise bicycle, a dementia activity that allows those with dementia to cycle through virtual natural environments or world landmarks. The bicycle can provide elderly with dementia increased mobility and fitness benefits. The act of bicycling may allow memories to be brought up providing those with dementia with a form of reminiscence.
Other fitness activities for those with dementia include: tai chi, yoga and seated exercises. Fitness activities can also be an effective way to prevent falls.
“Brain Bus” staff assists participants with activities while helping each person with dementia confident about their abilities. Dementia activities can be completed in a group thereby encouraging social interaction.
Reminiscence therapy activities can be use for those with dementia to recall certain feelings or parts of their lives and include:- Travel - photos, video, slideshows
- History – information to spark discussion and trigger memories
- Music - video jukeboxes, classic performances, by genre, artist, year
- Spiritual - hymns, bible stories, sermons, enjoy your faith or learn about another
- Games - storytelling
The “Brain Bus” hopes to engage the general public and reduce the stigma attached to dementia by providing information and educating the public. Their progam shows how technology can be used to enhance the quality of life for those living with dementia.
