WEATHERIZATION ASSISTANCE PROGRAM (WAP)
Across the USA.
"Families receiving weatherization services see their annual energy bills reduced by an average of about $437, depending on fuel prices. Because the energy improvements that make up weatherization services are long lived, the savings add up over time to substantial benefits for weatherization clients and their communities, and the nation as a whole."
Generally preference for weatherization is given to:
- Seniors and people over 60 years of age
- Families with one or more members with a disability
- Families with children
Examples of weatherization include carbon monoxide testing, heating system and air conditioning testing, adding weather stripping to doors and windows for air sealing, heating system filters replaced, insulation added, gas or oil leak repairs, programmable thermostats installed, fire alarms replaced, inifficent appliances replaces, energy efficient lightbulbs installed.
Each state has a list of local weatherization agencies to make home weatherization improvements.
Eligibility is determined based on proof of low income.
Residents who are renting are eligible for the program with permission from the landlord.
The Weatherization Assistance Program (WAP) includes an energy consultation with help for analysis of energy bills, an inspection for health and safety and recommendations of cost-effective energy savings.
All weatherization is made under the certification of the National Training & Education Resource (NTER) to ensure safety and building code. An added benefit of the program is that it creates new “green” jobs, and improves air quality.
Weatherization assistance work is for home energy reduction and does not include new roofing or other more involved home repairs.
