"PERFORMING ARTS LOUNGE - RESIDENCES FOR ELDERLY ARTISTS" PROGRAM
Halifax, Toronto, Stratford, Calgary Vancouver and Winnipeg
Canada.
Program Description
"Put your wheelchair in a corner somewhere, stand up and take a bow!"
- PAL Resident, PAL-Stratford Video, Steve Bayne Productions
The "Performing Arts Lounge (PAL)" residences are modern, subsidized housing buildings for senior members of Canada's entertainment industry.
"Performing Arts Lounge (PAL)" residences provide safe, affordable homes for creative professionals who work or have retired from the performing arts industry. Priority placement for housing is given to the elderly and disabled.
Seniors who have worked in film, television, radio, theatre, dance, music and other entertainment areas are all welcome to apply for PAL subsidized housing.
PAL Residences are currently in five Canadian cities including Halifax, Toronto, Stratford, Calgary, Vancouver and Winnipeg. Some "Performing Arts Lounge (PAL)" residence locations house theatres with professionally designed stage facilities available for use by residents and other professional performing artists and groups and for public performances. An in- house library is stocked with reading and arts reference materials. An arts studio and roof terrace gardens are also available.
"A professional actor, dancer, musician or behind-the-scenes worker can have a successful career in Canada's vibrant arts scene without ever being able to afford a home, save much for retirement or earn enough to establish a reasonable pension. If he or she becomes disabled at any point, hopes and plans for a secure old age recede even further. At the end of their careers, some of our most successful and well-known artistic pioneers have found themselves living in substandard accommodation, isolated, lonely and even hungry."

The Vancouver PAL residence won the prestigious Canada Mortgage and Housing Corporation (CMHC) Award in 2008 for best practices in affordable housing.
The mission of "PAL Canada" is to provide assistance to older, disabled or needy members and associates of Canada’s Performing Arts Community, in the areas of health, well-being and affordable accommodation.
