Certified Aging in Place Specialists are trained in the needs of the older adult population, aging in place home modifications and projects such as bathroom and kitchen remodeling, along with common problems associated with remodeling for the elderly.
Training coursed include:
-Marketing and Communication for Aging and Accessibility (CAPS I)
-Design and Building Solutions for Aging and Accessibility (CAPS II)
-Business Management for Building Professionals.
In addition to training coursed Certified Aging in Place Specialists are required to perform contract work under a code of ethics and are required to keep up with continuing education units from the building industry.
Certified Aging in Place Specialists are also required to do a small amount community service projects that includes any work done for the public for free.
Proof of liability insurance, workers compensation insurance and a valid business license state are required to be a Certified Aging in Place Specialist.
A small sample of aging in place home modifications or repairs for seniors may include:
-Installation of home elevators, stair, chair lifts
-Wheelchair or handicap ramps Installation of bath and shower grab bars
-Adjustment of countertop heights
-User Friendly Appliances
-Smooth Surface Flooring
-Curb less Shower stalls
-Multi-functional first-floor master suites
The "National Association of Home Builders (NAHB)" has an annual award, the"Homes for Life CAPS Design Award"to honor Certified Aging in Place Specialist designers. The award recognizes outstanding aging-in-place remodeling projects.
