Program Description
“The dog alerts a person who is deaf or hard of hearing to sounds by making physical contact with them and then leading them to that sound.”

Can Do Canines Assistance Dogs provides free service dogs including hearing assist dogs, mobility assist dogs and
Diabetes assist and seizure assist dogs.
Mobility assist dogs can help older adults with the following daily tasks:
- Opening and closing doors.
- Picking up and retrieving dropped objects.
- Pulling wheelchairs or steadying someone as they walk .
- Turning light switches on or off.
- Retrieving a cordless phone.
- Some dogs can also be trained as Diabetes Assist and Seizure Assist Dogs.
Hearing assist dogs can help older adults with the following daily tasks:
- Door knock or doorbell.
- Oven timer.
- Smoke detector.
- Alarm clock.
- Individual’s name being called.
- Phone ringing.
- Sound of an intruder.
- Baby crying.
Service dogs for the program are selected from shelters, breeders or donations.
Can Do Canines Assistance Dogs completes its mission of helping those with disabilities with the help of volunteer puppy raisers and fosters who help train dogs in house manners, obedience, basic assistance dog skills, and socialization.
