“Emergency rooms can be confusing and disorienting for older adults. That is why our geriatric Emergency Room offers specialized care with expert teams to better serve the specific needs of seniors. From admission to discharge and beyond, our goal is to deliver efficient and dignified care to help reduce hospital visits and readmissions.”

“In early 2019, UC San Diego Health opened the state-of-the-art Gary and Mary West Senior Emergency Care Unit, an 11-bed facility located within the existing Emergency Department featuring senior-appropriate geriatric care and other architectural design elements for older patients. UC San Diego Health and West Health are continuing to lead the way to wider adoption of geriatric emergency departments across the nation, ultimately improving outcomes and quality of life for seniors before, during and after a medical crisis.”

The Gary and Mary West Senior Emergency Care Unit UC San Diego Health is a part of UC San Diego Health ‘s Emergency Department.
The Geriatric Emergency Department at UC San Diego Health is a part of the Senior Medicine Program. Geriatric internists provide health care including primary care, health maintenance, diagnostic evaluations acute and chronic care, medical consultations and social and psychiatric care for older adults 75+.
UC San Diego Health and West Health aim to be leaders in spreading the concept of geriatric emergency departments across the nation.
The foundation conducts research on how specialized care delivery in the hospital, healthcare at home, and improved social services like meals and nutrition support can help seniors age successfully at a place of their choosing while lowering costs.
Additional projects by the Gary and Mary West Foundation include the Senior Wellness Center which provides older adult programs and services including case management, mental health services, legal and financial counsel, healthcare, housing assistance and the Gary and Mary West Senior Dental Center which provides low-income seniors with dental care.
The foundation aims to lower the cost of healthcare for seniors including emergency care, prescription drugs, dental care, conduct aging related research, and inform public policy decisions. source: westhealth.org, health.ucsd.edu
