“It’s called occupation because the whole point is we don’t have an activities coordinator because activities aren’t something we bolt on at certain times of the day. Occupation is because people need to feel self-worth they need to feel involved and included in what we do and the best way to do that is to occupy them in every things that are going on as we would if we were at home…for example we’ll ask them to help make the bed, or fold the towels, or get the own flannel.”

'We Are Family' aims to increase awareness and reduce the stigma associated with dementia. The film has been used in universities, professional forums and care facilities around the world to educate people on best-practice care.

‘We Are Family’ features interviews with nursing care staff and residents, along with photographs and video footage of the day-to-day life of senior residents at Starrett Lodge.

The film is a part of the Side by Side film project showcasing high standards and forward-thinking in dementia care which ultimately empower people living with dementia to remain active and fully participate in life.
