FOSTER GRANDPARENT PROGRAM

WHATEligible low-income seniors are placed in schools to mentor, tutor, and work with youth.
WHYTo provide volunteer opportunities to low-income seniors so that they are able use their skills and contribute to helping children in the classroom.
WHEREFoster Grandparent Program. Westchester Community Opportunity Program (WestCOP) Westchester, Putnam, Dutchess, Sullivan, Ulster and Orange, New York, USA.


Program Description

Foster Grandparent volunteers:

  • Must be 55 years or older.
  • Income eligible (under 200% of the Federal Poverty Guidelines)
  • Receive a tax- free hourly stipend for 15 to 35 hours of weekly volunteer service activities. 
  • Are provided paid vacation, holidays, sick leave and mileage reimbursement.

Foster Grandparents volunteer to help children who need extra help in the classroom and are alos available to help children to learn to read and assist teachers with other activities. 

Seniors volunteer with children in Head Start centers, pre-schools, and elementary schools.

The program believes that volunteering helps seniors to live longer and more independently while promoting a positive outlook on life.

The aim of the Westchester Community Opportunity Program is to make resources available to help low-income and at-risk populations including seniors, children and adults.

The Westchester Foster Grandparent Program is a part of the National Foster Grandparent program by Senior Corps.
