SPEAKING UP FOR OUR AGE PROGRAM
United Kingdom.
Program Description
"Many older people say they want to engage and be a part of their community, have a say in things that affect them, and make a contribution."
"...aims to support local authorities and the health economy with their decision- making by explaining how they can engage with older people on the design and delivery of local services. As local citizens, older people wish to be informed and engaged on all local matters, not just on those that are assumed to be of interest, such as health and social care."
-Booklet: Are You Listening. Age UK
Speaking Up For Our Age provides start-up and development grants and support to seniors who would like to start a forum.
The organization Age UK works with seniors who want to set up a forum by:
Giving practical support, providing grants, sending newsletters, and holding conferences and training sessions across the United Kingdom.
The benefits of senior forums are:
-Seniors can self-advocate their concerns and affect government policies.
-Seniors can use forums either as a social outlet online or to organize social events.
-Seniors are given a collective voice.
Age UK's useful resources to encourage older people to get involved in their communities include: a Forum Toolkit, Consulting and the booklets Engaging with Older People, and Are you Listening.
