Program Description
Volunteers and staff provide outreach to senior Medicare beneficiaries by:
-Hosting group presentations at senior communities, faith based communities and other locations
-Exhibiting at community events
-Answering calls to a Senior Medicare Patrol (SMP) helpline
-Provide one-on-one counseling
Senior Medicare beneficiaries learn how to:
-Guard against medical identity theft
-Report fraud on their health care bill and learn how to detect being charged for unnecessary services or services that were never provided
-Detect illegal telemarketing The organization California Health Advocates provides quality Medicare and related health care coverage information, education and policy advocacy.

SMP's resolve matters directly or refer them to state and national fraud control /consumer protection entities that include Medicare contractors, state Medicaid fraud control units, state attorneys general, the Office of Inspector General and the Centers for Medicare & Medicaid Services (CMS).
