FAITH BASED LEADERS RESPONSE TO ELDER ABUSE PROGRAM
Program Description
“As a member of a faith community, be you lay or clergy, you may be in a unique position to observe signs of abuse and neglect by family, paid caregivers, or facility staff. Protecting the elderly from further loss or pain is a mitzvah, a good deed, a spiritual duty. In addition, reporting elder abuse is an ethical, as well, in many states, a legal responsibility."

The National Center on Elder Abuse outlines how a congregation, place of worship, temple, church or other community of faith can help with elder abuse prevention.
Faith based communities and leaders can:
- Educate their faith community on what the signs of elder abuse are through the presentation, An Introduction to Elder Abuse - Communities United in Faith and Committed to Neighbors.
- Speak out against elder abuse and volunteer for community service projects on elder abuse prevention.
- Partner with agencies such as Adult Protective Services, the National Center on Elder Abuse and others.
- Create a safe place for victims of elder abuse.
- Report elder abuse if suspected.
It is encouraged by the National Center on Elder Abuse that when making an elder abuse presentation to a faith based community that a professional from Adult Protective Services, the Long Term Care Ombudsman Program or another expert be in attendance to answer any questions.
Anyone can take the initiative to make this Elder Abuse Prevention Presentation in their community churches, temples or other places of worship.
The power point training presentation is a free download.
