ROAD SCHOLAR GRANDS CAMP PROGRAM
Sagamore – A National Historic Landmark.
Raquette Lake, New York, USA.
"All of our 'grands camp' experiences are designed to bring family generations together in a safe and beautiful natural setting. Our programs provide a wide variety of activities designed to embrace the connections between grandparents and grandchildren while fostering a respect for our natural environment and this National Historic Landmark. Come see why Time Magazine has considered Sagamore's to be 'the granddaddy' of intergenerational programs."
"Grandparents and grandchildren participate in a wide range of activities designed to build vital connections between people and nature. Expect music, canoeing, swimming, hiking, natural crafts, singing, campfires, stars, balsam-scented air and lots of laughter."
The Grandmothers and Granddaughters program focuses on outdoor adventures, campfires and creativity. Music, hand-crafts and outdoor activities teach how Adirondack traditions have passed from generation to generation.
The Grandfathers and Grandsons program focuses on scouting in the Adirondacks, trail blazing, campfire building, pitching tents and tarps to make camp, and canoeing along a lake. Concepts from the Boy Scout Handbook are used such as relying on a compass to follow trails.
The Road Scholar Grands Program is for grandparents and their grandchildren between the ages of 6-12. Grands programs enjoy square dancing, talent night and stories in front of the campfire end of the night.
Grandparents have the option to rest during part of the afternoon, while children attend the kids club with Sagamore staff.
The Road Scholar Saga Grands Program also exists for grandparents with grandchildren of varied ages.
Grandparents and Grandchildren learn skills from the guidance and expertise of certified naturalists, musicians, and professional artists.
Great Camp Sagamore was the retreat of the Alfred G. Vanderbilt family up until 1954 and has since become a National Historic Landmark.
The main goal of Road Scholar is to promote lifelong learning. In addition to the "Grands Camp" Program, Road Scholar Senior Travel Tours are also available and led by expert travel instructors and offer older adults the chance to make long lasting friendship among like-minded people who enjoy traveling.
