THE ALZHEIMER'S ASSOCIATION SAFE RETURN PROGRAM

WHATA program that helps to identify and locate wandering, lost or missing persons with Alzheimer’s.
WHYTo coordinate the safe return of those who go missing due to Alzheimer’s or other dementia. MetLife Foundation.
WHEREThe Alzheimer's Association. Across USA.

Program Description

“Alzheimer’s disease causes millions of people in the United States to lose their ability to recognize familiar places and faces or to even remember their names or addresses. They may become disoriented and lost, even in their own neighborhood. They may wander by foot as well as by car or other form of transportation. Although common, wandering can be dangerous – if not found within 24 hours, up to half of those who wander risk serious injury or death.”

“When a person with dementia is reported missing search the immediate vicinity – 94 percent are found within 1.5 miles of where they disappeared.”
-source: ‘Alzheimer's Disease Guide for Law Enforcement.’

The Alzheimer’s Association, MedicAlert and local law enforcement work together to safely return those with Alzheimer’s or related dementia home.

An identification bracelet or necklace linked to personal information such as photo, medications, address is placed on the individual in case of a wandering or missing person event.

Police officers are trained to recognize the following situations in which those with Alzheimer’s or other dementia may find themselves in:

  • Car Accidents or Erratic Driving
  • False Reports
  • Shoplifting
  • Suicide and Homicide
  • Indecent Exposure

The Alzheimer's Association Safe Return Program is a 24-hour nationwide emergency response service with an enrollment fee.
