"VALVERDE COMMONS SUSTAINABLE ADULT COMMUNITY" PROGRAM
Taos, New Mexico, USA.
Program Description
"Valverde Commons is a dream cooked up by a group of friends who love their privacy and independence but whose natural bent is to volunteer as mentors in the schools, help other residents clean out the irrigation ditch, take a friend to the doctor and all the other kindnesses that add up to good old-fashioned neighborliness."

Seniors own their own homes and hold shared interest in the land and other shared areas in the neighborhood. The cohousing arrangment can be an economical solution by offering affordable senior housing.
The "Valverde Commons Senior Cohousing Community" places an emphasis on building a senior neighborhood in an environmentally sustainable manner, and in a way that connects each resident with their neighbor while still aiming to strike a balance and need for privacy.
Advantages of a shared senior community include being able to provide each senior community member assistance with grocery shopping, shared senior transportation, home health care and caregiver resources and much more.
Each senior resident is ideally available to help their neighbor to remain in their homes as long as possible however this support should not be a substitute for professional caregiver services if needed.
Valverde Commons Cohousing allows seniors to:
-Make decisions regarding their housing situation and community
-Design and build their own homes within cohousing guidelines
-Share common areas, services and amenities such as outdoor green space and gardens, walkways, biking trails along with a common community house for shared meals, senior activities and celebrations
