Program Description

“PSS was a pioneer in supporting grandparents who unexpectedly found themselves caring for their grandchildren. In the early 1990s, PSS began running support groups and providing services to this special population. In 2005, PSS partnered with the West Side Federation for Senior and Supportive Housing to open the first residence in the U.S. built specifically for grandparents raising grandchildren.”

Grandchildren living with their grandparents can help youth stay out of foster care and provide much needed emotional and educational support.

Intergenerational housing can help support older adults and children by having multiple grandfamilies in on apartment complex.

Grandfamilies can benefit from social activities, after-school activities, academic support, tutoring, field trips, case assistance, and support groups.

Grandparent Family Apartments provides affordable housing in two and three bedrooms for approximately 60 older adults and their grandchildren.

On-site support services for Grandfamilies include:

• Subsidized Rent for older adults.
• Kinship Program providing on-site support services staffed by social workers and educators.
• Housing designed to meet the needs of both older adults and children.
• 24-hour front desk service.
• Library.
• Laundry.
• Senior and youth community rooms.
• Green roof garden and relaxation area.
