"TENNESSEE OLDER ADULT SUICIDE PREVENTION PLAN" PROGRAM

Program Description

The "Tennessee Older Adult Suicide Prevention Plan" Program includes:

-Risk factors and warning signs of elderly suicide
-Interventions to prevent eldelry suicide
-Increasing awareness of elderly suicide in older adults
-Training for health care professions in older adult suicide
-Working with mental health and substance abuse organizations to prevent senior suicide

Warning Signs of Elderly Suicide

-Persistent sadness or depression
-Withdrawal or isolation from family and friends
-Giving away prized possessions
-Increased use of alcohol or drugs
-Acquiring potential lethal means such as buying a gun, stockpiling medication, etc.
-Weight loss or decrease in appetite      
-Change in sleeping patterns
-Frequent accidents such as falls
-Talking about or threatening suicide

The "Tennessee Older Adult Suicide Prevention Plan" Program is a grass-roots association which includes counselors, mental health professionals, physicians, clergy, journalists, social workers, and law enforcement personnel, as well as survivors of suicide and suicide attempts. TSPN works across the state to eliminate the stigma of suicide and educate communities about the warning signs of suicide, with the ultimate intention of reducing suicide rates in the state of Tennessee.
