Program Description
"The face of HIV is getting gray hair."
- Paul Spearing, Senior HIV Intervention Program
Traditionally doctors and seniors have thought of HIV as a young person's disease. Doctors may overlook early symptoms of HIV in elderly which can mimic aging related symptoms.
*Another risk factor for seniors in contracting HIV AIDS is the use of shared needles for medications for financially strapped elderly.
The Florida based program makes senior health presentations at senior housing communities and nursing homes and hands out free condoms to elderly.
The “Condom Granny,” Miriam Schuler works with the program to take the stigma out of elderly condom use by using humor when distributing condoms and vital senior health information.
