Older adults participate in the Experience Corps Program by volunteering and mentoring children in public schools a few times a week.
Senior volunteers can work one-on-one tutoring students or in a class room setting as a teaching assistant.
Seniors receive training which is intensive and curriculum based.
The Experience Corps Program provides:
-A new model of intergenerational engagement that values seniors and leverages the experience and leadership of older adults.
-Measurable results for students that demonstrate success of the Experience Corps Program
-A learning laboratory to study and strengthen Experience Corps Program.
-A commitment to publish research findings to help expand opportunities for boomers to serve their communities.
"Experience Corps is an award-winning national program which engages people over 55 in meeting their communities' greatest challenges. Today, in 19 cities across the country, 2,000 Experience Corps members tutor and mentor elementary school students, help teachers in the classroom, and lead after-school enrichment activities. Independent research shows that Experience Corps boosts student academic performance, helps schools and youth-serving organizations become more successful, and enhances the well-being of the older adults in the process."
