Program Description
Grandparents Raising Grandchildren (the Grandparenting project) is an initiative of COTA NSW. It exists to support the large number of grandparents in NSW who have full- time care of and responsibility for their grandchildren and is funded by the NSW Department of Human Services, Ageing, Disability and Home Care." source:COTA NSW Annual Report 2011
Grandparents Raising Grandchildren provides grandparents acting as parents with the following support:
-Help for grandparents in navigating a grandchild’s education, the school system, and learning assistance programs.
-Counselling and guidance for how cope emotionally for caring for a grandchild.
-Respite care for grandparents raising grandchildren along with childcare.
-Financial assistance.
-Legal assistance.
-Seminars for Grandparent & Kinship Carers.
-Grandparenting support groups.
-Guide to start your own grandparent as parents group.
-Resource guide for grandparent carers.
The Council on the Ageing NSW (COTA NSW) organizes an advocacy group called
The Grandparent, Relative and Kinship Carer Alliance (GRaKCA) which presents an agenda in support of carers to politicians, policy makers and service providers.
