Program Description

“Younger and older people still spend time together regularly in many countries; however, many communities are undergoing change, such as increased migration to cities, changes in family size and living conditions, fewer public spaces and longer working hours. These changes reduce opportunities for different generations outside families to meet in meaningful ways, to interact, engage and exchange ideas in daily life.”

“The aim of… intergenerational projects is to re-create such lost opportunities and to help spark new relationships among people who are not related and may be from widely different cultural, geographical or social backgrounds, resulting in mutual and reciprocal benefits for all.”

“Interventions for intergenerational contact are among the most effective for reducing ageism against older people and also show promise for reducing ageism against younger people.”

The United Nations Global Campaign to Combat Ageism is a global initiative aimed at raising awareness about ageism, which is the discrimination or prejudice against individuals based on their age. The campaign focuses on challenging stereotypes, misconceptions, and discriminatory practices that affect both older and younger generations.

The campaign emphasizes that ageism is harmful to individuals and society, contributing to inequality, social exclusion, and poor mental and physical health. It aims to promote a more inclusive society where people of all ages are treated with respect and dignity. Outcomes include: Decreased Ageism Improved Physical Health Improved Mental Health Social Connections New Skills Developed, Better Well-Being.

Intergenerational practice brings people of different ages or generations together in purposeful, mutually beneficial activities that promote greater understanding and respect. Such interactions and relationships contribute to stronger, better-connected communities.

Key objectives of the campaign include:

Raising Awareness - highlighting the negative impact of ageism on individuals and communities.
Promoting Policy Change - advocating for policies that address age discrimination in various sectors, including healthcare, employment, and education.
Encouraging Intergenerational Dialogue - fostering understanding and collaboration between different age groups to break down stereotypes.
Supporting Research and Data Collection - enhancing knowledge about ageism and its effects through data and research.

Through #AWorld4AllAges, individuals, organizations, and communities can share messages, initiatives, and stories that challenge age-related stereotypes and discrimination, promote intergenerational cooperation, and advocate for policies that support the rights and well-being of people of all ages.
