SILVER RAINBOW PROJECT
LGBT Elder Initiative. Philadelphia, USA.
Program Description
"Key challenges facing LGBT elders are: the effects of social stigma and prejudice, past and present, unequal treatment under laws, programs, and services, and reliance on informal 'families of choice' for social connections, care and support."

The Silver Rainbow Project by the LGBT Elder Initiative aims to help nursing facilities, assisted living and other adult care communities with the following:
- Provide senior service staff with information and skills to appropriately address the needs of LGBT seniors such as language and social structures that are unique to LGBT seniors.
- Allow senior service providers to create an LGBT friendly environment and break down the misconceptions and stereotypes about the aging LGBT population.
- Identify the unique challenges faced by LGBT seniors and the impact on health outcomes.
- Tools to provide quality care to all seniors regardless of their sexual orientation or gender identity.
In addition to LBGT senior cultural competency and sensitivity training, the LGBT Elder Initiative provides seniors with:
The LGBT Senior Housing Resource Guide - which outlines LGBT senior friendly affordable housing, independent living, assisted living and nursing home care.
Health and Nutrition - including the LGBT Senior Resource Guide for Healthcare along with information on HIV and aging.
The LGBT Elder Initiative works to ensure that lesbian, gay, bisexual and transgender older adults have rights and opportunities to live vibrant, creative and mutually supportive lives. They aim to achieve this by advocating for culturally sensitive and inclusive LGBT senior services.
