Program Description

"We ask nursing homes to first off include sexual orientation and gender identity in their service policies and non discrimination policies…it creates a dialogue within the organization that raises the awareness to the needs of this community..."
-Dan Ashbrook source: video: LGBT Voices-Dan Ashbrook

"Our mission is to improve the quality of life of older lesbian, gay, bisexual and transgender (LGBT) residents of Alameda and Contra Costa counties. Lavender Seniors advances this mission through direct services, outreach, advocacy and education. A critical aspect of this work is ensuring that LGBT elders are well-prepared emotionally, physically, legally, and socially in their later years."

Lavender Seniors assists all LGBT seniors particularly those who are isolated, vulnerable, disabled and at risk. The aim is to alleviate loneliness and isolation that many LGBT seniors may experience as they age.

Lavender Seniors provides the following LGBT senior services:

Free LGBT Sensitivity and Cultural Competency Training - cultural competency training program to increase awareness about the specific needs of LGBT seniors among aging and health service providers. A panel of LGBT seniors share their life experiences and a facilitator provides practical suggestions for reaching and serving this population.

LGBT Advocacy and Outreach– increases awareness and educates the community, government officials, legislators, and health care providers about LGBT aging issues.

Trains LGBT Seniors – who are interested in improving their community through civic engagement, serving on government advisory boards and commissions, coalitions, speaking at community events etc.

The Friendly Visitors Program - matches trained volunteers with LGBT seniors who may be frail, homebound, isolated, or otherwise concerned about aging at home with limited social support. Volunteers can help seniors through phone support, running errands, shopping assistance and more. The program aims to help provide additional support to LGBT seniors living in residential care facilities or those who are aging in place in their own homes.

The Emblem LGBTQ+ Certification Project – designates businesses as LGBT friendly and welcoming by Providing a rainbow placard to display in the place of business.
