Program Description

AGE Platform Europe works to represent equality for older adults in the areas of:

Age Equality- for all ages to participate fully in society and live with dignity.

• Ensure the adoption of an EU Age Equality Strategy
• Raise awareness of ageism as a form of discrimination that creates barriers to equality, freedom and participation.
• Empower groups to fight for equal rights amoung all ages
• Ensure that EU policies adopt a rights-based approach to aging
• Extend legal protection from age discrimination at EU level beyond the field of employment
• Advocate for a new UN convention to protect our rights in old age
• Promote understanding of the diversity of the older population and discrimination faced by groups, such as older women, older Roma people, older LGBTI people and older persons with disabilities.

Employment and Participation - for greater recognition of the potential and experience of older people in the labour market and in society.

• Promote age diversity in companies/organizations
• Adopt employment policies based on a life-course/person-centered approach to better support older people in the labour market.
• Increase adequate, accessible and affordable lifelong learning opportunities for adults, including beyond pensionable age
• Support the volunteering sector by providing individual benefits, such as insurance coverage, partial compensation or tax-deductibility
• Empower older persons to raise their voices about issues that concern them

Adequate Income and Social Inclusion - advocate for fair pensions and a Europe free from old-age poverty and social exclusion.  

Encourage:

• The EU and Member States to realize the promise of Ending Poverty through adequate minimum income schemes throughout the lifespan and adequate minimum pensions
• Pension systems to keep up with rising living costs and governments to include older persons in their support measures when living costs surge
• Adequate compensation of times spent outside the labour market on grounds of childcare, informal care, disability, sickness or unemployment through pension credits
• Inclusive and universal social protection systems that support persons in all situations of distress.

Dignified and Healthy Aging - to ensure the highest status of health and access to empowering care and support for people of all ages.

• Strengthening preventive health and health promotion policies at all ages
• Universal access to quality health, care and support services for all
• Care services that are patient-centered and empower persons across their lifespan
• Fight against abuse and neglect by prevention, research, access to help
• EU standards for quality LTC based on our European Quality Framework
• Support for informal carers in terms of financial compensation, supporting services and reconciliation of care with private and professional life
• Better working conditions and training of professional care workers

Accessible and Age- Friendly Environments - advocate for accessible and age-friendly environments to enhance autonomy and participation of older people, through accessibility, impact of digitalization in access to goods and services, mobility and housing.

• Secure full and equal access to essential services, so that face-to-face options remain available (e.g., public administration, transport, bank);
• Enhance accessibility, affordability and availability of digitalized services
• Prioritize accessible and affordable public transport to ensure door-to-door mobility between and within EU countries
• Support a life course approach for housing policy and initiatives, and support initiatives that adapt to the changing needs of its inhabitants.
