Program Description
"As the older generation of the LGBT community requires our help and support, we need to be there for them. Many of these same older LGBT people fought for the rights of the community that we enjoy today but are 3 times more likely than their heterosexual counterparts to be single and live alone, less likely to have children and far more likely to be estranged from their families, significantly more likely to experience damaging mental health problems."

Opening Doors London provides older LGBT community services in the UK with the hope of reducing some of the isolation often experienced as a result of aging.
Services provided to the elderly LGBT population include:
- LGBT Referral Service.
- LGBT Social Activities - film nights, speaker events, walking groups, coffee evenings, lunch clubs, theatre, cinema, museum and day trips, and pub nights.
- LGBT Befriending Service - aims to reduce the stress of loneliness and isolation, increase LGBT senior confidence, and allow the elderly to maintain their independence. The befriending service matches a volunteer with an older person, for regular social contact.
- LGBTQ+ cultural competency and sensitivity training designed for individuals and organizations within the senior care, healthcare, housing and social care sectors.
Opening Doors London Ambassadors work to increase awareness of older LGBT issues to policy makers in the UK and provide information, guidance and staff training for elderly service providers.
