Program Description


"A Dementia Friend is someone who, through viewing a series of online videos, learns about what it's like to live with dementia and then turns that understanding into action. From telling friends about the Dementia Friends program to visiting someone who is living with dementia, every action counts. Anyone of any age can be a Dementia Friend – we all have a part to play in creating dementia friendly communities!"

The hope is that by helping everyone in a community understand dementia and it affects that dementia friendly communities can be created.

In order to create a Dementia friendly community Dementia Friends America suggests bringing together community agencies and businesses to assess the community’s strengths and gaps for dementia friendliness, setting goals to improve, and finally taking action to improve the quality of live of those living with dementia in their community.

Dementia friendly communities aim to promote the following services to those with dementia:

-Early diagnosis and best care practices for dementia.
-Supportive housing and residential facilities specializing in memory loss for those with dementia. -Dementia friendly transportation.
-Businesses and workplaces such as banks, financial services institutions, government agencies and others which are informed and aware of the signs and effects of dementia.
-Dementia Friends – volunteers train to learn about what it's like to live with dementia through a series of online videos and commit themselves to helping those with dementia when possible and increase awareness of Dementia. Communities wishing to become dementia friendly can visit the website for a how-to Dementia friendly community toolkit.

Dementia training videos and excellent step-by-step guides are available for health care service providers, hospitals, the transport sector, first responders and emergency response systems along with grocery stores, banks, pharmacies, and restaurants on how to better serve those with dementia along with brochures.

Dementia Friends America also provides a How to be Dementia Friendly at Work power point training guide covering topics such as how employees can better communicate with someone with dementia in different settings such as retail, health care settings, government offices, etc, how to create a dementia friendly space using specific signage, flooring, seating and layout and more. Role playing and case studies are also used in the be Dementia Friendly at Work training guide.
