Program Description
“…because of the way they metabolize the medication, metabolize the alcohol all of a sudden they are over into a category that they’ve never lived in before…so what we find is that same drink that someone’s had their whole life - no problems all of a sudden their metabolism isn’t able to keep up so that one drink is like having two maybe three drinks…then you add the fact that most older adults start taking pills, whether it’s for pain, whether it’s for sleep, whether it’s for other things.”

Addiction issues for older adults may be related to things such as physical health, chronic pain, mental alertness, family, grief and loss or financial situation.
After being discharged from the addiction treatment program older adults can receive support such as:
- Ongoing therapy and coaching
- Support groups
- Support through Mobile apps and online social networks
- Recovery retreats
The Hazelden Betty Ford Foundation funds addiction studies, an addiction research center, recovery advocacy, professional and medical education, school-based prevention and resources for families with addiction.
